Liner Top Elements
Liner Top Elements are specialised elastomer sealing elements used in oil and gas wells as part of a liner hanger system. Their primary function is to create a pressure-tight seal between the liner and the production casing, isolating different zones within the wellbore and preventing fluid migration.
These sealing elements are critical during both well completion and production, helping to ensure well integrity under high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) conditions.
How They Work
Once the liner has been run into the well and the liner hanger is set, the liner top element is compressed or expanded against the casing wall to form a reliable seal. This seal:
- Prevents communication between different geological formations.
- Maintains pressure integrity.
- Protects the liner hanger assembly.
- Supports safe and efficient production.
Common Applications
Liner top elements are used in:
- Oil wells
- Gas wells
- Deepwater developments
- HPHT wells
- Sour service environments
- Horizontal and extended-reach wells
Key Performance Requirements
Because they operate in some of the harshest downhole environments, liner top elements must offer:
- High pressure resistance
- High temperature capability
- Excellent compression set resistance
- Resistance to sour gas (H₂S and CO₂)
- Chemical resistance to drilling and completion fluids
- Long-term sealing performance
- Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD) resistance where required
Materials Used
The material selected depends on the well conditions. Common elastomers include:
| Material | Typical Application |
|---|---|
| HNBR | High-pressure, oilfield applications with good mechanical strength |
| FKM | High-temperature and chemical-resistant environments |
| AFLAS® | Steam, amines, and aggressive chemical environments |
| FFKM | Extreme temperatures and highly aggressive chemicals |
| NBR | Standard oilfield applications with moderate temperatures |
